The El nino rainfall alert is out with the prediction of above normal rains in the Oct Nov Dec season and a 95% chance of rains extending to January 2016.This indicates possible effects of increased rainfall which may result to negative impacts in most parts of the country.
The following Counties are likely to experience direct effects of increased surface water levels due to the El nino related rains;
Nairobi, Narok, Kwale,Garissa, Mandera, Wajir,Marsabit,Samburu ,Isiolo,Meru ,Makueni,Murang'a,Nakuru, Migori,Turkana,Busia,Siaya ,Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet ,Mombasa ,Taita Taveta,Lamu,Tana River
Areas likely to be affected in Nairobi are;
Landslides- Mathare,Dagoretti,Kibera and River bank
Flash Floods- Uhuru Highway,Mombasa Rd(South C),Langata Rd(T Mall),Ngong River,Nairobi River(Mathare),Roysambu,most parts of CBD, Donholm,Umoja, Komarocks,Lower parts of Thika Road,Landhies Rd,and Jogoo Rd.

Storms/strong winds- Chiromo Rd, Limuru Rd, Karura Forest,Kilimani,Lavington,Karen, Eastlands (electricity poles)
Main effects may be as follows;
Damaged infrastructure
Drownings and injuries
Flash floods
Disease outbreaks
Destruction of crops and other farm products
The effects may lead to the following consequences;
Deaths and injuries due to collapsed infrastructure and drownings
Water contamination
Malaria outbreak
Cholera and other waterborne disease outbreaks
Impassable roads
Poor visibility when driving especially at night
Disruption of availability of essential commodities(e.g. foodstuffs) and services(electricity
supply)
Closure of public places e.g. worship areas,markets,restaurants
Blocked drainage system
Overflow of sewer lines
Freak accidents.

Minimize movements by making use of communication technology
Acquire alternative sources of electricity/lighting
Heed traffic advisories
Ensure vehicle in good conditions before start of trip
Do not walk or drive in any moving or stagnant water (10 cm deep)
Practice good sanitation
Sleep under a mosquito net
Keep alternative communication facilities in the car,in the house
Maintain situational awareness through media,police traffic alerts etc
Seek information about condition of roads before travel
Careful travel planning however short the trips may be.
